With all the beautiful sights and activities Sacramento has to offer its human residents, it should come as no surprise that man’s best friend can consider it a great city to live in as well.
According to a recent study conducted by SmartAsset, Sacramento ranks as the sixth most dog-friendly city in the United States. SmartAsset, a personal finance technology company helping consumers make smarter financial decisions, collected data on 100 major American cities and created a list of the 25 most dog-friendly cities. To quantify how dog-friendly cities are, they utilized six metrics categorized into two factors: dog accessibility and quality of life.
To analyze dog accessibility, the study used the following metrics: dog parks per 100,000 residents, dog-friendly shopping areas and dog-friendly restaurants. The metrics determining the quality of life include, the cities’ calculated walk-ability score from a 0-100 scale (0 signifies car-dependency and 100 is walking paradise), the weather determined by annual precipitation days and housing costs measured by the median home sale price.
After ranking the cities according to the six metrics, applying 20% weight to each dog accessibility metric, 15% to walk-ability and weather, and 10% to housing costs, a combined rank on a 100-point index was created. Key findings of the study revealed the west side of the country is the best side, given seven of the top 10 most dog-friendly cities are in western U.S. Also, Southern cities with the exception of Tampa, Florida, are at the bottom of the list and California is the most dog-friendly state with three cities ranking in the top 10.
As the leaves begin to turn orange and the weather cools for more pleasant outdoor adventures, it’s a perfect time to visit one of 11 off-leash dog parks, take a fun shopping trip, or to share a meal with your four-legged best friend in celebration of living in the sixth most dog-friendly city in America.
